Enzymatic Synthesis of Glucose Fatty Acid Esters Using SCOs as Acyl Group-Donors and Their Biological Activities

Sugar fatty acid esters, especially glucose esters (GEs), have broad applications in food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. In this research, the moieties derived from polyunsaturated acids containing single-cell oils (SCOs) (i.e., those produced Cunninghamella echinulata, Umbelopsis isabellina Nannochloropsis gaditana, as well olive oil an eicosapentaenoic (EPA) concentrate) were converted into GEs by enzymatic synthesis, using lipases biocatalysts. The GE synthesis was monitored thin-layer chromatography, FTIR situ NMR. It found that carried out immobilized Candida antarctica B lipase very effective, reaching total conversion of reactants. shown EPA-GEs effective against several pathogenic bacteria their activity can be attributed to high EPA content. Furthermore, C. echinulata-GEs more pathogens compared with U. isabellina-GEs, probably due presence gamma linolenic (GLA) lipids which is known for its antimicrobial activity, higher concentrations. also showed strong insecticidal Aedes aegypti larvae, followed EPA-GEs, oil-GEs N. gaditana-GEs. All synthesized induced apoptosis SKOV-3 ovarian cancer cell line, apoptotic rate increasing significantly after 48 h. A percentage observed cells treated echinulata-GEs, isabellina-GEs oil-GEs. We conclude SCOs used interesting biological properties.
